I am from the corn fields of Delaware, the granddaughter of a self-made millionaire with a chicken farm and an 8th grade education, the oldest daughter of 14 children, and the guinea pig of the homeschool movement in the 1980’s.
The vein of innovation runs deep in my blood.
I never went to prom; I still can’t figure out how to open a locker with a combination; and I never finished college, but I started my first business at the age of 11, teaching piano lessons to kids who were a couple of years behind me, and I was getting 3 kids ready for church by the age of 12.
I married at 19. Had 4 children by 26 and during the early days of motherhood began teaching myself photography and journalism. Through many hilarious mishaps (that I attribute to never having sent an email until my roommate in college taught me) I launched a lifestyle blog and photography business that would become featured in publications such as What To Expect, Babble by Disney, Darling Magazine, Life Beautiful Magazine, and the documentary, American Blogger, garnering thousands of fans.
Life is full of surprises.
Despite my site traffic steadily increasing, social media growth, and hype around the creation of my first memoir, I was running myself ragged, getting up at 4am to pump out new content, staying in contact with clients, and editing my photos. When I asked around, it seemed all of my fellow mom entrepreneur friends were doing the same, covering their haggard faces with an extra layer of foundation until they made “their big break”. And then I began to wonder, “Is there a better way?”
I dedicated the next few years to studying sustainable, scalable, business models, along with online branding/marketing in our currently saturated market. Dozens of business books and online courses later, I had the answer I had been looking for: “There is a better way. It’s not about working harder, it’s about working smarter.”
This is where the brand for Everyday Smarter was conceived. I knew women, like me, who wanted to chase their business dreams while still being the ones to pick their kids up from school. I knew they wanted to have regular family dinners but also learn about SEO. I knew they wanted to find the time to read business books, but also fit in Goodnight Moon at bedtime. I knew because I heard from them all the time.
How do you have time to read?
How do you keep your house in semi-decent order?
Do I need my LLC?
Should I use WordPress or Squarespace?
How do I use my Instagram account for my business with the new algorithm?
How do you get your kids dressed so cute?
I’ve decided to compile everything I’ve ever learned (the hard way) and give it to you (the easy way). With Everyday Smarter I will teach you what I’ve done to start my own businesses, grow my social media platforms to a combined 40,000 followers, scale my lifestyle blog to over 50,000 views per month, double my freelance prices while working less, and how to get away with two pairs of shoes per kid per season.
I’m an ENFJ on the Myers Briggs test, an eternal optimist, your biggest cheerleader, and perpetual reader (aka HOMESCHOOL GRADUATE). Currently residing in the northern suburbs of Atlanta, GA with my husband of 10 years and our 4 vivacious kids.
